Last night, there was a small gathering of amateur astronomers and sky watchers who met at the corner of Blackjack Oak Place and the Circle to wait for the meteor shower to begin. Tep and Hilary were there, so you know it was fun. Ken also came to check out those other-worldly lights, in spite of Monday night football, (!) and several other neighbors, including Keith, stopped by for a while. We had a nice fire going in the fire pit that did a good job of keeping us comfortable while we toasted marshmallows and played with the lone cat who made herself scarce when the dogs showed up with their owners. Shelby is a really beautiful mixed-breed, and I’d love to write a blog entry with her picture one day. You’ve probably seen Shelby walking Hilary around the circle from time to time.
It’s a funny thing, sitting around the fire with your neighbors, you begin to learn all sorts of interesting things about one another. For example, I had no idea that some of you are out there, walking your dogs at midnight. Now, those are dedicated dog-owners!
After a while, it became clear that the meteor shower wasn’t going to peak until after the moon set at 1:00, so we reluctantly packed up our gear and headed home. But I can see a couple of telescopes set up in our future. Maybe Keith will be kind enough to share some of his “sky-smarts” with the rest of us, and we’ll all learn a thing or two!
