With the Super Bowl coming up on Sunday, and everyone rooting for the Packers, right? Aren’t we? I’ve been thinking about Super Bowls past, especially last year’s, which we enjoyed tremendously. Having been raised on a steady diet of football, I always looked forward to the Super Bowl. Some years are better than others though. As we all know, they can be one-sided, boring, and long. “Sports Illustrated” offers up their list of the ten most boring Super Bowl games. http://tinyurl.com/ya2bkr2
Over the years, my sports appreciation index has grown, and I’ve discovered that college basketball can be pretty exciting, especially when it gets down to the Sweet-16 and so on. That’s fun to watch.
Jim is a big racing fan, so all of the NASCAR races and the Indy races, especially the Indy 500, loom large around here. And then there’s the World Series, especially if the Cardinals do well. But one thing we both have always enjoyed together are the triple-crown races, beginning with the Kentucky Derby. We never miss those and look forward to them every year. We got to visit Churchill Downs a few years ago, and it was a real thrill to tour the beautiful museum at the track, eat in their restaurant, (the food was delicious), and actually get a chance to step out onto the track itself. Unfortunately, there was no race on the day we went, but now we have an excuse to go back! The Bluegrass country is exceptionally beautiful, and the horse farms are positively incredible. Lots of “Kodak moments” there.
So, all in all, I’d have to say the Triple-Crown Races, especially the Kentucky Derby, are my favorite big sporting event. What’s yours?
