Spoke With Clara, Our Letter Carrier

Finally, after months of trying to catch her at the mailbox, I finally had a chance to speak with Clara yesterday. Naturally, I asked her about her son, a Marine serving in Afghanistan. It was bad news and good news.

Clara’s son was wounded when the vehicle he was riding in was attacked, and he was blown out of it. He was injured pretty badly, shattering his shoulder and suffering a head injury as well. That’s the bad news. The good news is that he is in San Diego and will have surgery in April, and he’s expected to make a full recovery. He’ll be in the hospital/rehab situation for six months.

Clara seemed to be very confident and calm. She said her son was supposed to get married in June, but they’re probably going to have to delay those plans for a while. She smiled and said, “I’ll bet this isn’t the first Marine who has had to delay a wedding. It’ll be all right.”

Clara is going to California in April to be with him when he has his surgery. I told her to give him our thanks, and that we’re grateful for his service.

So please say a prayer for this young Marine who put his life on the line for his country. Pray for his swift recovery and for a lovely wedding.  Semper Fi.
