Texas Drought: SE Texas Affected

The National Weather Service, Houston/Galveston, TX put out a lengthy statement two days ago, 4/15/11, regarding the drought situation in the northern third of southeast Texas. Their report is pretty grim.

Since Feb. 1, 2011, Houston has received just a little over 1 1/2 inches of rain. You have to go all the way back to 1916 to find a rain amount less than that. College Station is in even worse shape, having received only 1 1/3 inches.

Here’s an excerpt from the NWS Report. Please go their web site for more complete information on how this is affecting crops and water supplies. And while we’re at it, maybe we all need to say a little prayer for rain. It couldn’t hurt.

THE DRY PERIOD FOR SOUTHEAST TEXAS INTENSIFIED DURING THE AUTUMN OF
2010 AS A STRONG LA NINA PHASE DEVELOPED. ALTHOUGH THERE WAS A BRIEF
PERIOD WITH ABOVE NORMAL RAINFALL DURING LATE DECEMBER AND EARLY
JANUARY...THE OVERALL TREND SINCE OCTOBER HAS BEEN VERY DRY WITH
BELOW NORMAL RAINFALL.
