Texas Wildfires: Fire in Austin; Federal Help Sought

A grass fire in southwest Austin has destroyed several homes. The continuing wildfires, which have now burned over 1,000 square miles of mostly rural land has prompted Governor Rick Perry to issue a disaster declaration. This would enable the state to seek federal help. In a statement on Sunday, 4/17/11, Governor Perry said, “Texas is reaching its capacity to respond to these emergencies and is in need of federal assistance. I urge President Obama to approve our request quickly.”

The fire burned 30-40 acres in Austin, the capital city of Texas, and prompted the evacuation of some 200 homes. For more details, see The Daily Comet’s online article today.
