List and Map of EF-5 Tornadoes in the U.S. Since 1950

According to NOAA, there have been 56 recorded F5/EF-5 tornadoes in the U.S. since 1950. It seems Texas has the dubious distinction of having the first recorded EF-5, (an F-5 at that time) on May 11, 1950 in Waco. The “F” designation, used since 1971, was replaced by the “Enhanced Fujita, or “EF” Scale in 2007. The designations for twisters before 1971 are based upon recorded wind speeds and damages caused.

Here’s a map for you, showing the locations of these storms. The number designates the order in which they occurred, and yes, Joplin is on there at number 56. Map and list are courtesy of NOAA. You may click on the map to go to their site.

As you go down the list, you’ll notice that it has been a while since we’ve had an EF-5, and this year, NOAA has given four tornadoes that designation so far this year. Let’s hope there are no more this year. But look down at 1974. What a horrible year that was. Also notice that there were five EF-5’s in 1953. Do you think “global warming” was a factor back then? You can begin to appreciate the difficulty of blaming any weather event on climate change. Here’s the list, again from NOAA:
